Betel nut smile in Vietnam. The lips and mouth of the betel nut chewer are very red, and the teeth appear to have been coated with black enamel. The betel nut is the small fruit of the areca palm. The nut along with leaves of the betel climber, and a bit of raw limestone are mixed into a paste. The user prepares this mixture with a mortar and pestle. Usually only one “chew” is prepared at a time.
